Civil documents
Non marriage certificate attestation
A non marriage certificate proves you are not currently married. Gulf employers and foreign registrars ask for it regularly, and it is one of our standard documents.
What applies to this document
A non marriage certificate is a public document issued by a government agency. If the original is presented, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires no secondary endorsement before its own attestation. A photocopy must first be certified by a Notary Public.
The destination country mission then adds the final stamp.
- 01
Issuing authority or notary public
The document is verified at source, or certified as a true copy by a notary public.
- 02
The relevant ministry
Education certificates go through the education authorities. Other documents go through the ministry that governs them.
- 03
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The consular division at Wisma Putra in Putrajaya legalises the document for use abroad.
- 04
The destination embassy
The embassy or consulate of the destination country adds the final stamp. Most sit in Kuala Lumpur, a few in Putrajaya.
What a non marriage certificate actually proves
A non marriage certificate confirms that no civil marriage is recorded against you in the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara register at the date it was issued. That is narrower than it sounds, and it is why the date on the certificate matters.
Because it proves a state at a point in time, receiving authorities usually want a recent one. A certificate issued months ago may be refused even after it has been legalised.
Commonly needed for
- Marriage abroad
- Employment and residence applications in the Gulf
- Sponsorship applications
- Status confirmation requested by an employer
What we need to quote
Scans of the document and the destination country. We confirm which steps apply, what each costs and how long yours takes before anything is submitted.
Worth knowing
Order the certificate and start the legalisation close together, so the validity window is not spent sitting in the chain.
Questions
Do you need the original non marriage certificate?
If the original is presented, no secondary endorsement is required before Wisma Putra. A photocopy must be certified by a Notary Public first.
My document is not in English. Is that a problem?
Not for Wisma Putra, which requires documents not in English to be translated into English. We handle translation into English, Malay, Arabic, Persian, Mandarin and Tamil.
