Divorce certificate attestation
Divorce documents are asked for when marital status has to be proven abroad, most often alongside a new marriage or a dependant visa.
What applies to this document
A divorce certificate is a public document issued by a government agency. If the original is presented, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires no secondary endorsement before its own attestation. A photocopy must first be certified by a Notary Public.
The destination country mission then adds the final stamp.

Education certificates go through the education authorities. Other documents go through the ministry that governs them.

The consular division at Wisma Putra in Putrajaya legalises the document for use abroad.

The embassy or consulate of the destination country adds the final stamp. Most sit in Kuala Lumpur, a few in Putrajaya.
Civil and Syariah divorces are recorded in different places
Civil divorces are recorded by Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, which maintains the civil divorce record.
Divorces under Syariah jurisdiction are handled by the Syariah court and the state religious authority instead, so the document you hold and the office that certifies it both differ. We check which you have before anything is submitted.

Do you need the original divorce certificate?
If the original is presented, no secondary endorsement is required before Wisma Putra. A photocopy must be certified by a Notary Public first.
My document is not in English. Is that a problem?
